Pulsed electromagnetic field, three modes

The ELAMED ALMAG+ (ALMAG PLUS) PEMF device

The ALMAG+ pairs a mains-powered control unit with one emitter of four linked coils. It runs a traveling pulsed magnetic field at two strengths, or a stationary field, and times every session automatically.

ELAMED makes it in Russia, and Almagia International in Brooklyn, New York, distributes it in the US alongside the ALMAG-01, the MAGOFON-01, the ALMAG-02 and the DIAMAG. The whole line is on our Almagia page.

Modes

3

Two with a traveling field and one with a stationary field. You pick the mode before a session starts.

Field at the coil

20 ± 6 mT

Peak value at the coil surface in Mode 1. Mode 2 runs at 8 ± 2 mT and Mode 3 at 6 ± 2 mT.

Session

20 minutes

Set automatically in every mode, with a short beep every 5 minutes and an automatic stop at the end.

What it is

How the ALMAG+ is built

Two parts: a small control unit, which ELAMED describes as a current pulse generator, and an emitter on a 1.2 m (3.9 ft) cable.

The emitter holds four coils, which ELAMED calls inductor coils, wired as two pairs joined by a 0.4 m (1.3 ft) cable. The coil wired directly to the control unit is coil 1, and the others follow in order to coil 4.

Each coil carries the letter "N" on one face. That face is the north pole of the field, and it is the face that goes toward the body.

Two emitter layouts

ELAMED's manual gives two emitter setups. In the straight "spline" layout, the four coils sit in a row inside the spline fastener: coils 3 and 4 go in first with the Velcro tabs, then coils 1 and 2, and the fastener zips closed. The two straps pass over the zipper and fasten with Velcro to hold the spline in place.

In the 2x2 matrix layout, the two coil pairs lie side by side with no fastener. ELAMED asks that the operation manual stay with the device for its whole service life.

Electrical build

The ALMAG+ is double insulated (electrical safety Class II, no earth pin needed), and the coils are a type BF applied part. The control unit is rated IP41 and the emitter IP42: protected against solid objects over 1 mm and dripping water, not immersion. The coil faces stay at or below 41 °C (about 106 °F), the control unit at or below 45 °C (113 °F).

The settings

The three ALMAG+ modes

Each mode sets the field type, the coil pulse rate and the field strength at the coil surface, as printed in ELAMED's operation manual.

Mode 1 Mode 2 Mode 3
Field Traveling Traveling Stationary
Coils fire One after another One after another All together
Coil pulse rate on US 60 Hz power 7.5 Hz 7.5 Hz 120 Hz
Peak field at the coil surface 20 ± 6 mT 8 ± 2 mT 6 ± 2 mT
Session time 20 min 20 min 20 min

Traveling and stationary fields

In a traveling field the four coils are excited in series, from coil 1 to coil 4, so the pulsed field moves along the emitter. Mode 2 uses the same sequence as Mode 1 at a lower field strength. In the stationary field of Mode 3 all four coils are excited at the same moment.

Why the manual prints 6.25 and 100 Hz

The pulse rate follows the mains: one eighth of the mains frequency in the traveling modes and twice it in the stationary mode. ELAMED's table prints the 50 Hz results; on 60 Hz US power the same rules give 7.5 Hz and 120 Hz, and Almagia's US specifications list both pairs.

Day to day

Running the ALMAG+

A session, step by step

Plug the control unit into a working outlet where neither cable is pulled tight. The START/STOP light blinks to show the unit is waiting. Press any button and the mode lights 1, 2 and 3 flash in turn, then the light for the last mode used comes on with a beep; the unit stores that mode for next time.

Press Mode Select to step through Mode 1, 2 and 3. The unit beeps once, twice or three times to match the mode you land on. Place the coils with the "N" faces toward the body, directly on the skin or over clothing, and press START/STOP.

The control unit: mode lights, the Mode Select button and the START/STOP button.

The START/STOP light stays on while the field runs, and the unit beeps every 5 minutes. After 20 minutes it stops by itself with a beep. Press START/STOP again to end a session sooner. The mode cannot be changed while a session is running. Five minutes after a session ends the unit returns to standby. Unplug it from the outlet after use.

Session limits in the manual

ELAMED rates the ALMAG+ for up to 8 hours of work in repeated cycles of 20 minutes on and 10 minutes idle. For the person using it, the manual limits total use to 40 minutes a day. It also asks for at least 8 hours between sessions.

Checking that it works

The box includes a small magnetic field indicator. While a mode is running, hold it against each coil on the "N" side in turn. The light in the middle of the indicator glows when the pulsed field is present.

The unit also checks itself: a beep with the Mode 2 light blinking means a broken emitter cable wire, and with the Mode 3 light blinking a coil circuit fault. Either needs repair by ELAMED or its representative; call us and we arrange it with Almagia.

Cleaning and storage

Disinfect the outer surfaces before the first use and as needed after that. Wipe them twice with a cloth moistened with a disinfectant; for home use ELAMED suggests a 0.5% to 1% chlorhexidine solution in water, mixed with rubber gloves on. Keep liquid out of the control unit and the coils, then wipe with a damp, wrung-out cloth and let the surfaces dry.

Use it at 10 to 35 °C (50 to 95 °F) in a dry room, away from direct sun, heat, knocks and vibration, and do not twist or bend the cables. Store it in its retail box at 1 to 40 °C (34 to 104 °F), and keep the box, since a unit returned for exchange or repair must travel fully packed. After storage or shipping below 10 °C, wait at least 2 hours at room temperature before switching it on.

Safety information

ALMAG+ contraindications and warnings

ELAMED's manual asks users to consult their doctor and read the contraindications before using the ALMAG+. Consult your physician before use.

Do not use the ALMAG+ during pregnancy or with an implanted pacemaker near the area of use.

Contraindications in the English manual

  • Acute pyoinflammatory conditions.
  • Aortic aneurysm.
  • Pregnancy.
  • Systemic blood diseases.
  • Malignancies.
  • Thyrotoxicosis.
  • Alcoholic intoxication.
  • Atrial fibrillation.
  • An implanted pacemaker in the exposure area.

ELAMED's current manual also lists

  • Acute infectious diseases, and purulent inflammation anywhere in the body.
  • Reduced blood clotting, a tendency to bleed, or any ongoing bleeding.
  • Drug intoxication, or psychomotor agitation of any cause.
  • Uncontrolled high blood pressure, 180/110 mmHg or higher despite medication, or low blood pressure of 90/60 mmHg or lower.
  • Aneurysm of the aorta or other large vessels.
  • Severe arrhythmias, including atrial flutter and paroxysmal tachycardia; second or third degree AV block; sinus bradyarrhythmia.
  • Active tuberculosis.
  • Acute or subacute myocardial infarction.
  • An implanted pacemaker within 90 cm (about 35 in) of the exposure area.
  • Individual hypersensitivity to magnetic fields.

Metal pieces fixed in bone and metal dental crowns are not a contraindication. Loose metal fragments in soft tissue within 4 cm of the surface are different: ELAMED does not recommend fields above 15 mT over them without a specialist's advice, and Mode 1's rated field of 20 ± 6 mT can exceed that level.

Warnings from the manual

Never run a session longer than the manual allows: ELAMED lists a rise in blood pressure and a worsening of existing conditions as possible effects of too long an exposure. If your blood pressure runs high, the manual asks you to measure it before a session and 20 to 30 minutes after during the first 6 days of use, and to speak to your doctor before the next session if it changes by more than 25 mmHg.

Do not use the unit if the housing, a cable or a coil is damaged, or if a housing has been opened. Do not lift or carry it by the cable, and do not unplug it by pulling the cord. Keep it out of reach of unsupervised children. Mobile phones and other radio transmitters can interfere with it, and only the supplied cables and parts should be used.

Buyer questions

ALMAG+ questions buyers ask before ordering

What is the ALMAG+ (ALMAG PLUS)?

The ALMAG+, also written ALMAG PLUS, is a pulsed electromagnetic field device made by ELAMED in Russia and distributed in the US by Almagia International. It has a control unit with three modes and one emitter of four coils in two linked pairs.

What are the three ALMAG+ modes?

Mode 1 is a traveling field at 20 ± 6 mT peak at the coil surface, and Mode 2 is the same traveling field at 8 ± 2 mT. Mode 3 is a stationary field at 6 ± 2 mT, with all four coils firing together. On US 60 Hz power, Modes 1 and 2 pulse at 7.5 Hz and Mode 3 at 120 Hz.

How long is an ALMAG+ session?

Every ALMAG+ session is set automatically to 20 minutes in all three modes. The unit beeps every 5 minutes, stops on its own at the end, and pressing START/STOP ends a session sooner. ELAMED's manual says total use should not exceed 40 minutes a day.

How is the ALMAG+ emitter set up?

The ALMAG+ emitter has two layouts. As a straight spline, the four coils sit in a row inside the supplied spline fastener and the two straps hold it in place. As a 2x2 matrix, the two coil pairs are laid side by side with no fastener. In both, the coil faces marked "N" go toward the body.

What comes in the ALMAG+ box?

The ALMAG+ box contains the control unit with its four-coil emitter, a spline fastener, two straps, a magnetic field indicator for checking that the device works, and the operation manual. ELAMED's English manual lists no carrying case and no plug adapter.

Does the ALMAG+ work on 120 V US power?

Yes. ELAMED's English manual lists a 120 volt, 60 Hz power supply version of the ALMAG+, drawing no more than 55 VA. It has electrical safety Class II insulation, so no earth pin is needed, and a 2.0 m (6.6 ft) power cord.

Who should not use the ALMAG+?

ELAMED's manual lists pregnancy, an implanted pacemaker near the area of use, acute pyoinflammatory conditions, aortic aneurysm, systemic blood diseases, malignancies, thyrotoxicosis, alcoholic intoxication and atrial fibrillation. Its current edition adds bleeding disorders, severe arrhythmias, uncontrolled high or very low blood pressure, active tuberculosis and acute or subacute myocardial infarction. Consult your physician before use.

How do I check that the ALMAG+ is working?

The ALMAG+ comes with a small magnetic field indicator. While a mode is running, hold it against each coil on the "N" side, and the light in its middle glows when the pulsed field is present. The unit also beeps and blinks the Mode 2 or Mode 3 light if it detects a cable or coil circuit fault.

How do I clean the ALMAG+?

Wipe the outer surfaces of the ALMAG+ twice with a cloth moistened with a disinfectant, such as the 0.5% to 1% chlorhexidine solution ELAMED suggests for home use. Keep liquid out of the control unit and the coils, then wipe with a damp, wrung-out cloth and let it dry.

What warranty comes with the ALMAG+?

ELAMED's manual sets a 12 month manufacturer warranty on the ALMAG+ from the date of sale, covering repair or replacement on presentation of the warranty card, and excludes unauthorized repairs, mechanical damage, liquids and unsuitable mains power. Recovery Room Direct coordinates any warranty claim with Almagia International, the US distributor, on your behalf.
