Cold Therapy on Your Schedule, at Your Temperature

Your tub is ready the moment you are — set a temperature in the app, step in, and the chiller holds it within ±1°F automatically. It does this by pulling water through a refrigeration cycle via two quick-connect hoses, chilling it before it returns to your tub.

Every unit includes a cooling compressor, a resistance heater, an automated ozone sanitation system, a 20-micron filtration system, and a WiFi app so you can schedule temperature from your phone before you walk in the door. No buckets. No waiting. No drift. If you want a tub that already comes paired with a chiller, see our cold plunges with chillers — or browse our full range of cold plunge tubs to find one compatible with your setup.

Sizing Guide

Which HP Do You Actually Need?

A cold plunge water chiller's output is measured in horsepower. Both our current models handle tubs up to 135 gallons — the difference is how fast they get there.

Cooling Speed by HP

Tub Volume Setting Recommended HP Cooling Rate
Up to 80 gal Indoor, climate-controlled 0.8 HP 1–3°F per 30 min
80–135 gal Indoor, climate-controlled 0.8 or 1.0 HP 0.8 HP slower; 1.0 HP faster
Any size Outdoor or warm ambient 1.0 HP 1–3°F per 20 min
100–135 gal Any setting 1.0 HP Fastest pull-down

When you're on the borderline, size up. A chiller running with headroom runs quieter, cycles less, and lasts longer. Ambient temperature adds real cooling load — a garage in Phoenix is a very different environment than a climate-controlled home gym. Higher-capacity options for larger commercial setups are added as manufacturers release them; call us if you have requirements beyond what's listed here.

The BTU Formula

BTUs needed = (Gallons × 8.33 × Temp Drop °F) ÷ Hours to target Example — 100-gal tub, 72°F → 50°F in 4 hours: = (100 × 8.33 × 22) ÷ 4 = 4,582 BTUs/hr required

Real-world performance varies with insulation quality and lid discipline. A covered, well-insulated tub pulls significantly less load. Pre-chilling tap water and keeping the tub shaded outdoors both help.

Cost Comparison

Ice vs. Chiller: The Real Per-Session Math

The upfront cost of a chiller surprises some buyers. The ongoing cost of ice surprises everyone who runs the numbers.

Cost Factor Ice Method Chiller Method
Per-session cost $8–$15 (bags + time) $0.30–$1.00 (electricity)
5 sessions/week, annual $2,080–$3,900/year $78–$260/year
Temperature consistency Drifts as ice melts Holds ±1°F automatically
Weekly maintenance time 30–60 min (sourcing, filling) <5 min (filter check)
On-demand plunging Plan 30–60 min ahead Always ready
Break-Even

At 5 sessions/week with mid-range ice costs ($11/session = $2,860/year) vs. chiller electricity ($0.65/session = $169/year): the $3,299 entry chiller pays for itself in roughly 14–18 months. After that, you save over $2,600 per year — every year — while plunging at a consistent temperature the moment you want it.

Buying Guide

3 Questions to Answer Before You Order

Most chiller buying mistakes come down to one of three things. Answer these before you add to cart — and call us if you're unsure on any of them.

Question 01

How many gallons is your tub?

Both units handle up to 135 gallons. The question is how fast you want to get there. For tubs under 80 gallons indoors, the 0.8 HP is plenty. For 80–135 gallons or outdoor use, the 1.0 HP's faster cooling rate makes a meaningful difference. Not sure about your tub's capacity? Browse our cold plunge tubs — every listing includes volume specs.

Question 02

Do you have a 120V outlet nearby?

Both units run on standard 120V household current with a built-in GFCI plug — no dedicated circuit required for most homes. The outlet needs to be within cord reach and not shared with other high-draw appliances. Confirm before the unit arrives so setup day is straightforward.

Question 03

Where will the chiller unit sit?

The chiller is a separate unit connected to your tub by hoses. Leave 6–12 inches of clearance on all sides for airflow. It generates moderate heat exhaust — ventilation matters indoors. Outdoors, keep it away from direct rainfall and leave access to the filter compartment for maintenance.

Still not sure which unit is right for your setup? Call us and we'll walk through it: (888) 500‑5675.

Frequently Asked Questions

Cold Plunge Chiller FAQ

Sizing, cost, electrical, shipping, safety, and returns — the most common questions answered before you buy.

What does a cold plunge chiller do?

A cold plunge chiller — sometimes called a cold plunge water chiller or ice bath chiller unit — is a self-contained refrigeration device that connects to your tub via two quick-connect hoses: one inlet, one outlet. It pulls water through a refrigeration cycle and returns it chilled to your target temperature, holding it automatically without any ice, refilling, or monitoring. The integrated heater lets you set a warm temperature for contrast therapy or recovery soaks.

What size chiller do I need for my cold plunge tub?

Both the 0.8 HP and 1.0 HP units are rated by the manufacturer for tubs up to 135 gallons. The difference is cooling speed: the 0.8 HP cools 1–3°F every 30 minutes; the 1.0 HP cools 1–3°F every 20 minutes. For smaller tubs (under 80 gallons) in climate-controlled indoor spaces, the 0.8 HP is plenty. For larger tubs, outdoor setups, or when you want the water ready faster, choose the 1.0 HP. When in doubt, size up — a chiller running with headroom runs quieter and lasts longer. Call us and we'll match you to the right unit: (888) 500‑5675.

How do I calculate the BTUs I need from a chiller?

The formula: BTUs needed = (Gallons × 8.33 × Temperature Drop °F) ÷ Hours to reach target. Example: 100-gallon tub, dropping from 72°F to 50°F in 4 hours = (100 × 8.33 × 22) ÷ 4 = 4,582 BTUs/hr required. Insulation quality and ambient temperature affect real-world results — a covered, insulated tub with a lid pulls significantly less load than an open stock tank in a warm garage.

Ice vs. chiller — what does a session actually cost?

Ice typically runs $8–$15 per session when you account for bags, sourcing time, and frequency. A cold plunge chiller uses roughly $0.30–$1.00 in electricity per session depending on your utility rate and starting water temperature. At 5 sessions per week, that's a break-even of roughly 14–18 months versus ongoing ice costs at mid-range pricing — after which you're saving over $2,600 per year compared to buying ice, while plunging on demand at a consistent temperature every time.

What electrical requirements does a cold plunge chiller need?

Both the 0.8 HP and 1.0 HP chillers run on standard 120V household current with a built-in GFCI plug — no dedicated circuit or electrician required for most installs. The outlet should be within cord reach of the unit and not shared with other high-draw appliances on the same circuit. Commercial or outdoor installations with long runs should verify voltage drop with a licensed electrician.

Can I use this chiller with my existing cold plunge tub?

Yes, in most cases. This cold plunge chiller attachment connects via two quick-connect hoses included in the box — you'll need two compatible ports on your tub, one inlet and one outlet. Many stock tanks, purpose-built cold plunge tubs, and chest freezer conversions are compatible. Looking for a tub that comes with the chiller already matched? See our cold plunges with chillers — pre-paired combos are a common choice. If you already have a tub, send us the model or a photo and we'll confirm compatibility before you buy: (888) 500‑5675.

Does the chiller also heat the water? Can I do hot-cold contrast therapy?

Yes. Both the PRO and Premier units include an integrated resistance heater in addition to the cooling compressor. The heating range reaches approximately 98–104°F, which supports contrast therapy protocols — cycle from cold immersion to a warm soak in the same tub without a separate device. The WiFi app lets you schedule temperature changes in advance so the water is at the right temperature before you step in.

How often does the filter need servicing?

Both PRO and Premier units use replaceable 20-micron filter cartridges. Rinse or replace every 4–6 weeks under regular use (3–5 sessions per week), or sooner if the water appears cloudy. Premier units include an upgraded two-stage filtration system with longer service intervals. Both units also include an automated ozone sanitation system that helps keep the water clear between filter changes. Two replacement filters ship in the box so you're covered out of the gate.

How is a cold plunge chiller delivered?

Chillers ship via FedEx or UPS Ground to the 48 contiguous US states at no additional charge — no freight truck, no liftgate required. Delivery is standard parcel service to your door. Estimated transit time is 3–7 business days after your order is processed. We do not currently ship to Alaska, Hawaii, or international addresses.

Is cold plunge therapy safe for everyone?

Cold water immersion is not appropriate for everyone. If you have cardiovascular disease, arrhythmia, uncontrolled hypertension, are pregnant, have Raynaud's syndrome, or have a history of epilepsy or seizure disorders, consult your physician before use. This is not an exhaustive list. When in doubt, your doctor is the right first call. Our team is happy to answer equipment questions: (888) 500‑5675.

What is the return policy?

Returns are accepted within 30 days of delivery. A 20% restocking fee applies, and the customer is responsible for return freight costs. Units must be returned in original, uninstalled condition in original packaging. If your unit arrives damaged or defective, contact us within 48 hours of delivery with photos of the damage and we will arrange a replacement or full refund at no cost to you.

Why not just buy this on Amazon?

Chillers listed on Amazon are often sold by unauthorized third-party sellers — not by the manufacturer or its authorized dealers. Grey-market units may arrive without US warranty coverage, with non-spec power cords, or as returned and refurbished stock without disclosure. Recovery Room Direct is an authorized dealer. Every unit ships new from the manufacturer, includes a 1-year manufacturer warranty, and is backed by our expert support team: (888) 500‑5675.

Is Recovery Room Direct an authorized dealer for these chillers?

Yes. Recovery Room Direct is a fully authorized dealer. Every chiller we sell is new, sourced directly from the manufacturer, and covered by the 1-year manufacturer warranty. Our team has hands-on product knowledge and can help you select the right unit, guide you through installation, and support any warranty claim. Call us anytime: (888) 500‑5675.
