Sauna Heater Packages: The Heater and the Parts Its Manual Names

Open a sauna heater carton and you'll find the heater, its fixings and a manual. No stone. On many models there's no control either, and without one the heater won't switch on at all.

A package puts the missing parts in the same order. The stone comes in the grade and weight the manual gives. The control is the version built for that heater and your supply. A wood stove arrives with its chimney and floor protection. Every part comes from the heater's own manufacturer.

Three kinds of package, and what you want from the room picks one:

  • The simplest install: built-in controls, so just the heater and its stone.
  • Starting it from your phone, or a 208 volt three phase supply: a heater with a separate control.
  • No spare circuit at all: a wood stove with its chimney.

What Comes in Each Type of Package

The parts list depends on how the heater gets switched on and what it burns. Some stores sell the same thing as a sauna heater kit.

Built-in controls

The timer and thermostat sit on the heater body, so there's no second box to mount or wire. The package is the heater and its stone, the shortest parts list here. In these packages, built-in controls run up to 9 kW.

Separate control unit

The heater won't run until a control unit is wired to it, so the package adds one. It's more than a touch panel. The power unit that switches the heater and the data cable come with it, and every control in these packages has WiFi. The largest commercial heaters also get a power extension unit.

Wood-burning stove

A wood-burning sauna stove package has no wiring and no control, but it has the longest list. The stove comes with a steel chimney kit and extension made for its flue, the floor plate and, where its manual names one, the protective sheath, and the larger stone a firebox takes.

Electric Sauna Heater Packages: Why the Control Has to Match

A control sold on its own looks like one product. It's really several. The same panel comes in versions for different supplies, and each version publishes its own maximum load. Order the wrong one and your electrician finds out on install day.

Supply comes first

Most home sauna heaters run on 240 volt single phase. Some buildings, mostly commercial ones, have 208 volt three phase instead. A heater built for that supply, and its control if it has a separate one, has to match it.

Where a package is offered in both, choosing the supply changes the heater and the control together, so the pair can't end up mismatched. One setup trips people up: those heaters aren't rated for 208 volt single phase, which some multi-unit buildings are wired for. If that's what your panel shows, call before you order.

Load rating, heater grade and the sensor

A control's published load rating has to cover the heater's output. Some controls also ask for a heater grade during setup, a code from the heater's manual that matches the control's output limit to that model. Where a package needs one, its product page prints the setting before the installer has to ask. The largest commercial heaters also split their load with a power extension unit beside the control, and those packages include it.

The sensor is the other quiet detail. Some heaters ship with their own temperature sensor, and the manual says to use that one rather than the sensor packed with the control. Amperage, wire size and circuit counts are laid out on electric sauna heaters.

On the heater or on the wall

Controls on the heater

Dials on the body, nothing to mount outside the room and one fewer thing to wire. It's the lower price for the same output. The trade is that you set it from inside the sauna, and there's no starting it remotely.

A control on the wall

A touch panel placed where it's easy to reach, a clear display, and WiFi, so the room can be hot when you get home. On some of the controls here, starting remotely needs the manufacturer's paid app upgrade once a free trial ends. It costs more, and it adds a power unit, a data cable run and a sensor to the install.

How Many Stones Come in a Sauna Heater Package

Manufacturers rate a heater by the weight of stone it holds, and stone, which some sellers call rocks, comes in whole boxes. So a package rounds up to the next full box. Never down.

A small heater's box leaves some over. Don't force the extra in. Fill to the rated weight and keep the rest, because stone is natural, it varies in shape and it breaks down with heat, so the spares get used.

Why the grade matters

Size and shape aren't cosmetic. Stone that's too small or too flat packs tight and chokes the airflow an electric heater depends on. An open cage is built around rounded stone.

A wood stove takes the larger 4 to 6 inch grade. That makes the 2 to 4 inch stone sold for electric heaters the wrong stone there, even though it's the same rock. The manufacturer's warranty terms also exclude damage caused by stone it doesn't recommend, which is why each package carries the grade printed in that heater's manual.

Installation

What's Left for Your Electrician or Chimney Installer

A package covers the parts the manufacturer names for the heater itself. The installation is yours to arrange, so budget for it now.

On an electric package

The supply cable, the breaker, the conduit and the labor to connect them. Every electric heater here is hardwired by a licensed electrician. The manufacturer publishes rated amperage and a minimum wire size rather than a breaker size, so your electrician sizes the circuit to local code. Benches, lighting, ventilation and the room itself sit outside the package too.

On a wood stove package

The carpentry and roofing work to get the chimney through your ceiling and roof, the permit and the inspection. The chimney kit and extension are included. Because the length a room needs depends on ceiling height, roof type and route, we check the run with you before the order ships. Firewood is on you, cut to fit.

Two details that catch wood stove buyers

The flue on these stoves is 4.5 inches. Most North American stove pipe is 6 or 8 inches and none of it is 4.5, so you won't match it at a hardware store. The package uses the manufacturer's own steel chimney, made for that collar, so no adapter is needed. If your building department wants a listed 6 inch Class A chimney instead, that route takes an adapter, covered on wood-burning sauna stoves. Ask your building department and your insurer which they'll accept before you order.

The fireboxes take logs of 13.8 or 15.4 inches, depending on the stove. Cordwood in the US is normally cut to 16, so a cord ordered the usual way won't fit. Ask for the shorter length when you buy, or plan to cut it down.

Published clearances are set per model, not per category. Check them against the exact spot the heater or stove will sit before anything is fixed to a wall.

Parcel or Freight, Depending on the Heater

A package doesn't come in one box. Knowing that before the first carton lands saves a worried phone call.

Electric packages

Most electric packages travel by parcel carrier, each part in its own carton, so there's no freight appointment and no liftgate to arrange. Cartons can arrive on different days. A package built around an open-cage heater brings four boxes of stone on top of the heater and the control, around 175 pounds in all.

Two kinds of heater are heavy enough for freight: the combination heaters with a steamer in the cabinet, and the largest commercial cabinet heaters. The heater comes on a delivery appointment we set up with you, and the control and stone follow as parcels.

Wood stove packages

The stove moves by LTL freight on a pallet, and we call to set a delivery appointment. Delivery is curbside, so the driver won't bring the pallet inside or up steps. The chimney kit, extension, sheath, floor plate and stone follow as parcels, so expect more than one delivery. Boxed stoves weigh from about 100 to 220 pounds, so plan for help getting one into the sauna.

Whatever arrives, check each carton before you sign. Note any damage on the delivery receipt at the time, then contact us the same day so we can open a claim. Shipping is free throughout the lower 48. Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and Canada are quoted separately, so contact us before ordering.

How Sauna Heater Package Pricing Works

The heater, stove or control carries the same price inside a package as it does on its own page. Nothing is added for putting the package together.

There's no bundle discount either, and that's deliberate. A package priced at its parts added together can be set beside another dealer's package without a discount on one line hiding a higher price on another. If you find the same package listed for less on the day you order, our price match covers it.

So what are you paying for? The matching. The control is the version built for that heater and your supply. The stone is the grade and quantity the manual gives. A wood stove's chimney is the one made for its flue. That's what goes wrong when the pieces get ordered one at a time.

Replacing a heater

The room and the circuit already exist, which settles most of the choice. Match the supply at the panel first, then the output. If the old control unit isn't compatible with the new heater, a package with its own control saves finding that out after the old heater is off the wall.

Finishing a new room

The most freedom and the most to get wrong. Choose the heater before the walls close, because the circuit, the control position and the cable run all cost less now. Converting a closet? One compact heater in these packages runs on 120 volts, and it's the only one that will. Most of these go into indoor saunas.

Cabins, rentals and facilities

A wood stove package suits a cabin with no circuit to spare. Ask your insurer what they'll accept for a solid-fuel appliance before you order. For gyms, spas and hotels, check the panel for 208 volt three phase first, and talk to commercial sales about quantities.

A tape measure and a look at your electrical panel settle most of this list.

  • The supply at your panel: 240V single phase, 208V three phase, or 120V for the one compact model.
  • Dials on the heater, or a wall control you can start from your phone.
  • Your room volume inside the range printed on the package page.
  • A ceiling as high as the package page asks: 75 inches for most electric heaters here, up to 82.7 on the largest.
  • The parts you already own, so you don't buy them twice.
  • Somewhere to take a freight delivery, and help to move a stove or a large heater.
  • The chimney route, and which chimney your building department will accept.
  • Firewood cut to the length on the stove's page, 13.8 or 15.4 inches.

What the package gives you is the matching. You get the right control version for your supply and the right stone grade in enough boxes to fill the heater. On a wood stove, you get a chimney made for its flue.

Does a sauna heater package include the control unit?

Yes, whenever the heater needs one. Heaters with a timer and thermostat on the body come with their stone only, because there's no control to add. Heaters without on-board controls come with a matched control unit plus its power unit and data cable, and the largest commercial heaters add a power extension unit. Model codes usually hint at which is which, but the letters aren't consistent between product families, so go by the listing.

Do I still need an electrician with a sauna heater package?

Yes, for every electric package. The heaters are hardwired, and the supply cable, breaker and conduit aren't included. Your electrician sizes the circuit from the heater's published amperage and your local code. A wood stove needs no electrician, but in most places a solid-fuel appliance and its flue need a permit and an inspection.

How does a sauna heater package ship?

Most electric packages ship by parcel carrier in separate cartons, which can arrive on different days, with no freight appointment. In commercial use a wood stove is covered for 6 months. Sauna stones aren't covered. The terms ask for proof that a qualified electrician installed an electric heater, and for visible defects to be claimed before installation.
