A PEMF (pulsed electromagnetic field) machine is a control unit that sends electrical current through coil emitters in short pulses, and each pulse produces a magnetic field at the coil surface. Its operating manual sets the field strength at the coil, the pulse rate, the field pattern (traveling, with the coils firing in sequence, or stationary, with all of them firing together) and the session time.

The ALMAG-01, ALMAG+ and ALMAG-02 manuals each describe use at home, and the ALMAG+ and ALMAG-02 manuals add that home use should be on a doctor’s recommendation or advice. The MAGOFON-01 manual names adults aged 18 and over as its users and says no special training is needed. Each manual also lists contraindications and precautions. The ALMAG-01 has a flexible line of four coil emitters that fire in sequence, one fixed mode and a timer that switches the field off after about 18 minutes. The ALMAG+ has one emitter of four linked coils and three modes: a traveling field at two strengths and a stationary field, each with a 20 minute session. The ALMAG-02 is a desktop system with a main emitter of 16 coils, a flexible line of 6 coils and a local emitter, running 79 stored programs; programs 51 to 79 need the local emitter, which is included in the set we sell (ELAMED’s delivery option 2). The MAGOFON-01 is a handheld unit that pairs an alternating magnetic field with a vibrating membrane in one flat face; it has no switch, its vibration stops at 15 minutes and its magnetic field stays on until you unplug it.

It depends on the model, and the device sets it. The ALMAG-01’s field switches off after about 18 minutes, and the ALMAG+ times every session at 20 minutes. Each ALMAG-02 program sets its own time, from 7 to 30 minutes in the manual’s program table. The MAGOFON-01’s vibration stops at 15 minutes while its magnetic field stays on, so unplug it then and wait at least 30 minutes before the next use. Follow the operating manual for rest periods between sessions.

The operating manuals list contraindications that include pregnancy, an implanted pacemaker, cancer, systemic blood disease or bleeding, thyrotoxicosis, acute infectious disease or acute inflammation with pus, and, for most of the models, severe heart rhythm disorders or the acute period after a heart attack. They can. ELAMED rates the ALMAG coil surfaces at no more than 41 °C (about 106 °F), and the ALMAG-01 and ALMAG+ control units at no more than 45 °C (113 °F). The MAGOFON-01 beeps every 30 seconds after 15 minutes because further use can heat its working surface more than intended; unplug it then and wait at least 30 minutes. If anything feels unpleasant, stop and consult your physician.

Follow the operating manual for your model. Each manual sets the run time and the rest period before the next run, and some add a daily limit: the ALMAG+ manual, for example, limits total use to 40 minutes a day. Consult your physician before starting a routine.
