Harvia Wood-Burning Sauna Stoves: Finnish Fire, North American Rules
Harvia began in Finland in 1950 with a wood-burning sauna stove, and the stoves we carry cover rooms from 177 up to 1,766 cubic feet. Every one carries Harvia's CE and EAC marks.
That shapes three things a North American buyer settles before ordering: the chimney, the clearances and what your inspector will accept. The stove itself has nothing to wire, which is why it suits a sauna far from the house.

The range
The Harvia Wood Stove Range, Family by Family
Within a family the stove body follows one design. The versions change how you load it, whether it heats water and how big a room it heats.
| Family | Models here | Output | Room volume, cu ft |
|---|---|---|---|
| M3 | M3, M3 SL | 16.5 kW | 212 to 459 |
| Legend | 150, 150 SL, 240 GreenFlame, 240 SL, 240 Duo, 300 | 15.9 to 23 kW | 212 to 989 |
| Linear | 16, 18 Compact, 22 GreenFlame, 22 GreenFlame ES | 14.3 to 17.9 kW | 177 to 636 |
| Pro | 20, 20 ES, 20 LS, 20 RS, 20 SL, 20 Duo, 26, 36, 36 Duo | 24.1 to 31 kW | 283 to 1,271 |
| Harvia 50 | 50 | 40 kW | 706 to 1,766 |
Harvia's Cilindro 16 and Cilindro 20 wood stoves sit with the electric Cilindro pillars on our Harvia Cilindro page, so they're not in the grid or the tables here.
Reading the letters
- SL: the fire chamber extends through the sauna wall, so you load the stove from the changing room or from outside.
- Duo: the same through-wall extension, finished with a glass door on the loading side.
- ES, LS and RS: a fixed water tank with a tap, at the front, left or right, heated by the same fire.
- GreenFlame: Harvia's name for the fire chamber on the Legend 240 and Linear 22 versions that carry it.

Sizing
Harvia Wood Stove Sizing: Room Volume From Harvia's Manuals
Size a stove by the room's volume, as you would an electric heater, but don't compare kilowatts across the two. Go by the room ranges. Harvia prints them in cubic meters in each stove manual, and the figures below are those ranges in cubic feet.
| Room volume, cu ft | Harvia stove | Output |
|---|---|---|
| 177 to 636 | Linear 18 Compact | 14.3 kW |
| 212 to 459 | M3, M3 SL | 16.5 kW |
| 212 to 459 | Legend 150, Legend 150 SL | 16 kW |
| 212 to 565 | Linear 16 | 17.9 kW |
| 283 to 706 | Pro 20, in every version | 24.1 kW |
| 318 to 636 | Linear 22 GreenFlame, GreenFlame ES | 15.7 kW |
| 353 to 706 | Legend 240 GreenFlame | 15.9 kW |
| 353 to 848 | Legend 240 SL, Legend 240 Duo | 21 kW |
| 353 to 918 | Pro 26 | 26.6 kW |
| 494 to 989 | Legend 300 | 23 kW |
| 494 to 1,271 | Pro 36, Pro 36 Duo | 31 kW |
| 706 to 1,766 | Harvia 50 | 40 kW |
Glass, masonry and a stove that's too small
Harvia's stove manuals add 1.2 cubic meters of volume for every square meter of uninsulated brick, glass, tile or concrete, about 3.9 cubic feet for every square foot. They also warn that a stove with too little output has to be fired longer and harder, which shortens its life. If you land between two sizes, our Heater Finder checks your room against these same ranges.
The Legend 240 GreenFlame and Linear 22 GreenFlame stoves also need a room at least 82.7 inches tall. The other Harvia stove manuals set no minimum room height, only a clearance above the stove.
Chimney
Chimney and Flue for a Harvia Wood Stove
Every Harvia stove manual calls for a T600 temperature class chimney. The connection is 115 mm, about 4.5 inches, on every stove here except the Harvia 50, which takes 140 mm. North American stove pipe is commonly 6 inches or larger, so plan the joint between stove and chimney before anything ships.
Harvia sells its own steel chimney kits, and the Harvia packages on this page include one. Harvia gives those kits CE and EAC marks. NFPA 211 and the residential code ask for a factory-built chimney on a wood-burning appliance to be listed to UL 103 and marked Type HT. Ask your building department whether Harvia's kit will be accepted where you live.
The flue adapter
Harvia's 115 to 155 mm pipe adapter is offered as an option on the 115 mm stove pages, for a run that steps up in diameter. Your chimney installer will tell you whether your run needs it.
Clearances
Clearances, Floor and Ceiling in Harvia's Manuals
Harvia prints the clearances for each stove on dimensioned drawings in its manual. They're specific to the model, so check them against the corner you actually have in mind.
Above the stove
From the top of the stove to the ceiling, Harvia's manuals call for 1,000 to 1,300 mm depending on the model, about 39 to 51 inches. Add the stove's own height to find the lowest ceiling that works.
Around it
Side, rear and front distances are on each model's drawing, and on stoves that take a Harvia protective sheath, the sheath reduces them. The SL and Duo versions add rules for the wall the fire chamber passes through.
Under it
On concrete at least 60 mm (2.4 in) thick, the Legend, M3, Pro and Linear manuals ask for no floor protection. A tiled or combustible floor takes Harvia's protective bedding, and a combustible floor also needs non-flammable protection in front of the door.
The Harvia 50 has its own floor rules. On a combustible floor its manual asks for a 60 mm concrete slab reaching 300 mm beyond its sides and back and 400 mm in front, or Harvia's sheath and bedding.
Listing and your inspector
Harvia publishes CE and EAC marks for these stoves and does not publish a North American listing for them. Under NFPA 211, the solid-fuel standard many inspectors work from, an unlisted stove falls back to 36 inches of clearance on every side unless the inspector approves otherwise. Show your inspector the stove's drawing before you frame the room.
One order
Harvia Wood Stove Packages: Stove, Chimney and Stone on One Order
Every family here except the Harvia 50 also comes as a package, priced at the parts added together. A package holds the stove, Harvia's steel chimney kit with an extension, the floor protection and the stone, and most add a protective sheath.
What changes by family
The Linear 18 Compact package has no sheath. Every package can also add a Harvia water heater. Every package lets you choose the chimney in stainless steel or black.
Before you order one
The package chimney carries CE and EAC marks rather than a US listing, so confirm with your building department that it will be accepted. If it won't be, buy the stove on its own and let your installer supply the chimney.

Stone for a wood stove
Our stove pages call for Harvia AC3020, stone 4 to 6 inches across, rather than the smaller AC3000 made for electric heaters, and each page gives the box count. Stones added to a bare stove are charged per box at checkout because they're heavy. In a package, the stone comes with it.
Compare them with the electric heater packages on our sauna heater packages page.
Who buys these
Three Ways Harvia Wood Stove Buyers Start
A cabin with no power
There's no circuit to run, which suits a sauna at the end of the garden or by the lake. Settle the chimney route and the floor first, then choose the stove that covers the room. Still choosing the room? Browse outdoor saunas.
Loading from outside the hot room
The SL and Duo versions feed through the wall, so you add wood without opening the sauna door. The wall the fire chamber passes through has its own rules in the manual, so plan it with the framing.
Hot water on hand
The Pro 20 ES, LS and RS carry a fixed tank with a tap, heated by the same fire. The Legend, Linear, M3 and Pro stove pages also offer a Harvia water heater as an add-on.

Four Harvia Wood Stoves, One for Each Common Cabin
Four ways to fire a sauna, from a compact cabin to the largest rooms, each with Harvia's own room figures.
Staff Pick: compact cabin
Harvia M3, 16.5 kW
Harvia's compact steel stove, for rooms of 212 to 459 cu ft, filled with about two boxes of AC3020 stone. An SL version loads through the wall.
View this stove ›Staff Pick: mid-size sauna
Harvia Pro 20, 24.1 kW
For rooms of 283 to 706 cu ft. The same stove also comes with a front, left or right water tank, or as an SL or Duo that loads through the wall.
View this stove ›Staff Pick: feed it from outside
Harvia Legend 240 Duo, 21 kW
For rooms of 353 to 848 cu ft. Its fire chamber runs through the wall to a glass door on the loading side, which turns the fire into a fireplace for the room you feed it from.
View this stove ›Staff Pick: the largest rooms
Harvia 50, 40 kW
For rooms of 706 to 1,766 cu ft. It takes a 140 mm flue connection rather than 115 mm, so its chimney is planned apart from the rest of the range.

Harvia Wood-Burning Sauna Stoves: Frequently Asked Questions
What size Harvia wood stove do I need?
Measure the inside of the room in feet, multiply length by width by height, then choose a stove whose Harvia range covers that number. Add about 3.9 cubic feet for every square foot of uninsulated glass, brick or tile. Harvia warns that an undersized stove has to be fired longer and harder, which shortens its life, so avoid shaving it close.
What chimney does a Harvia wood stove need?
Harvia's manuals call for a T600 temperature class chimney on a 115 mm connection, or 140 mm on the Harvia 50. Harvia's own steel chimney kits carry CE and EAC marks, while NFPA 211 and the residential code ask for a factory-built chimney listed to UL 103 and marked Type HT. Whatever you choose, you need a chimney your local inspector approves, installed by a qualified installer.
Are Harvia wood stoves UL listed?
Harvia publishes CE and EAC marks for its wood stoves and does not publish a North American listing for them. CE is a European conformity marking, not a US or Canadian listing. Depending on where you live, that can affect permitting, inspection and what your home insurer accepts, so check with your building department and insurer before you order.
What do SL, Duo, ES, LS and RS mean on a Harvia stove?
SL means the fire chamber extends through the sauna wall, so you load the stove from the changing room or outside. Duo is the same extension with a glass door on the loading side. ES, LS and RS are fixed water tanks with a tap, at the front, left or right. GreenFlame is Harvia's name for the fire chamber on the versions that carry it.
What floor does a Harvia wood stove need?
On concrete at least 60 mm, about 2.4 inches, thick, the Legend, M3, Pro and Linear manuals ask for no floor protection. A tiled or combustible floor takes Harvia's protective bedding, and a combustible floor also needs non-flammable protection in front of the door. The Harvia 50 has its own rules in its manual, so read its floor section before you pour or tile.
How much ceiling height does a Harvia stove need?
Harvia's manuals set a gap of 1,000 to 1,300 mm, about 39 to 51 inches, from the top of the stove to the ceiling, depending on the model. Add the stove's own height to that gap to find the lowest ceiling that works. The Legend 240 GreenFlame and Linear 22 GreenFlame stoves also need a room at least 82.7 inches tall.
Which stones does a Harvia wood stove take?
Larger stone than an electric heater. Our stove pages call for Harvia AC3020, 4 to 6 inches across, rather than the AC3000 made for electric heaters, and give the box count for each stove. Stones added to a bare stove are charged per box at checkout because they're heavy, while a package includes the stone its stove needs.
What comes in a Harvia wood stove package?
The stove, Harvia's steel chimney kit with an extension, floor protection and the stone, priced at the parts added together. Most packages add a protective sheath, and every package offers the chimney in stainless steel or black. Because the chimney carries CE and EAC marks rather than a US listing, confirm it with your building department first.
How do Harvia wood stoves ship?
Stoves come with free shipping on most orders to the contiguous 48 states. Each one travels by LTL freight on a pallet, and the carrier calls to set a delivery appointment. Delivery is to the curb, so arrange help to move a heavy stove. Stones added to a bare stove are charged per box at checkout, and the parts of a package can arrive as separate parcels.
Are you an authorized dealer for these Harvia stoves?
Yes. As a factory-authorized dealer, we sell each stove with its manufacturer's warranty, on the terms Harvia's own policy sets out. The terms are on our Harvia warranty page, so read them before you install. If you want the room size, chimney route and floor checked against the stove before you order, call (888) 500-5675.
Tell us the room and the chimney route
Send the inside dimensions, the wall and floor build, and where the chimney would go. We'll name the Harvia stove that covers the room and what a package would hold.
