Harvia Spirit Sauna Heaters

Spirit carries its stones in an open steel spiral instead of a closed box, so the heat comes off rock you can see. It is the one Harvia family that takes rounded stone only.

Harvia Spirit: An Open Cage on the Wall

Most wall heaters hide the stones behind a grille. The Spirit wraps them in an open steel spiral with nothing in front, which changes both how the room looks and how the steam comes off.

That one difference drives everything else on this page: the stone you buy, the steam you get, and why the Spirit costs more than a KIP at the same output.

The range

Every Harvia Spirit

Three outputs, one cage, one control decision. All three take a separate Xenio or Fenix.

Model Output Room volume Supply Controls
Spirit SP60E 6 kW Up to 294 cu ft 240V single phase Separate Xenio or Fenix
Spirit SP80E 8 kW 177 to 431 cu ft 240V single phase Separate Xenio or Fenix
Spirit SP90E 9 kW Up to 494 cu ft 240V single phase Separate Xenio or Fenix

The Spirit takes Harvia R-991 rounded stone, which ships in a 33 lb box, not the split-face AC3000 most Harvia heaters use. Fitting the wrong grade voids the heater warranty.

The choice

What the Open Cage Changes

The spiral is not styling. It changes the stone you buy and the steam you get.

Rounded stone, not split-face

An open cage is built around rounded stone, which stacks with gaps that let air move. Split-face rock, the angular grade almost every other Harvia takes, packs tight in a cage and chokes the airflow the elements depend on. Harvia specifies R-991 rounded stone for the Spirit, and says plainly that the wrong stone voids the warranty.

Floor-heater steam from a wall unit

With 110 lb of exposed rock, the Spirit behaves more like a small pillar than a wall box. The steam comes off visible stone rather than through a grille, which is the reason to choose it over a KIP at the same output.

A separate control, every time

There is no built-in version of the Spirit. All three take a Xenio or Fenix mounted outside the room, which means a wall position to plan and app or remote start if you want it.

Before you order

Before You Order a Harvia Spirit

Rounded stone only, and this one voids warranties. The Spirit takes Harvia R-991 rounded stone in 33 lb boxes, not the split-face AC3000 the rest of the range uses. An open cage needs rounded rock to stack with air gaps through it. Harvia states plainly that the wrong stone voids the heater warranty.

Four boxes, and they are a different part number

The cage holds about 110 lb, which is four 33 lb boxes of R-991. A Spirit package includes them already counted. If you are buying the heater bare, order R-991 and not AC3000, because the two look similar in a listing and behave nothing alike in a cage.

A separate control on every model

There is no built-in version of the Spirit. All three take a Xenio or Fenix outside the room, so plan the wall position and count the control in the budget.

Questions answered

Harvia Spirit Sauna Heaters: Frequently Asked Questions

What stones does the Harvia Spirit need?

Rounded stone only. Harvia specifies R-991 rounded olivine diabase, which ships in a 33 lb box, and the cage holds about 110 lb, so four boxes. This is the one Harvia family that will not take the split-face AC3000 stone the rest of the range uses, and fitting the wrong grade voids the heater warranty.

Why does the Spirit use different stone from other Harvia heaters?

Because the cage is open. Rounded stone stacks with gaps that let air move through the spiral. Angular split-face rock packs tight in an open cage and chokes the airflow the elements rely on, which is fine behind a closed grille and not fine here.

What is the difference between the Harvia Spirit and the Virta?

The Spirit is a wall-mounted open cage at 6 to 9 kW. The Virta is a floor-standing cabinet that runs from 6 kW to 20 kW in the Pro models and takes a much larger stone load. The Spirit is the one to choose when you want visible stone and soft steam without giving up floor space.

Does the Harvia Spirit need a separate control?

Yes, all three models do. There is no built-in version. A Xenio or Fenix control mounts outside the sauna room, which adds a wall position to plan and gives you delayed start and app control.

What size room does a Harvia Spirit heat?

The SP60E covers up to 294 cubic feet, the SP80E 177 to 431, and the SP90E up to 494. Add for a large glass door or an uninsulated wall, both of which pull heat out faster than a lined surface.

Is the Spirit a good first sauna heater?

It is a considered choice rather than a default one. If you want the simplest possible install, a KIP with built-in controls is less to buy and less to wire. The Spirit is for someone who has sat in a sauna with an open stone heater and wants that instead.
