It draws full rated power during preheat, then cycles on and off to hold temperature once the room reaches the setpoint. The numbers above assume it never cycles off, so your real cost sits below every figure in the table. The reason the gap is small is that the extra energy goes almost entirely into a longer preheat, and preheat is a small share of the total. Golden Designs tells owners to "allow 10 to 15 extra minutes preheat time in winter," and for very cold weather notes the stove "may take 30 to 45 minutes to reach full temperature." Fifteen extra minutes of an 8 kW element is 2 kWh, which at 18.44 cents is 37 cents.
Set against the monthly picture, the same 8 kW sauna used three times a week has a ceiling of about 139 kWh per month in mild weather and 165 kWh in winter. At the national rate that is $25.57 against $30.36. Again, both are ceilings and your actual bill will be lower.
Those preheat allowances are worth reading carefully, because the two brands handle them differently. Golden Designs publishes both figures: 30 to 40 minutes to reach the traditional range of 170 to 185°F in normal conditions, plus the cold-climate allowance above. Dundalk LeisureCraft declines to publish a number at all, on the grounds that heat-up time depends mainly on the heater you choose and the outdoor temperature, so the company sizes the heater with the buyer rather than printing a figure that will not hold. That wood stove figure looks alarming next to the electric numbers until you remember they are not measured the same way. A wood stove is rated on heat output with no thermostat and no duty cycle, so a 16 kW wood rating and a 6 kW electric rating can heat the same room. Where buyers get this wrong. The temptation in a cold climate is to oversize the heater so it heats faster. Three things, none of which is the heater failing to keep up. Glass performance, cedar movement in the first season and snow at the door are the issues that actually generate calls, and all three are manageable if you know about them beforehand.
Single-pane glass behaves like single-pane glass. Dundalk LeisureCraft specifies 5 mm bronze tempered single pane for its doors and windows rather than sealed double-glazed units. Snow arrives at the door. This sounds trivial and is the most common practical complaint. A pitched steel or shingled roof sheds snow, which is the point, but it sheds it somewhere. A 2013 study in the Journal of Human Kinetics (Pilch et al., PMID 24511348, n=18) put nine trained middle-distance runners and nine untrained men through a single 15-minute Finnish sauna session at 96 ± 2°C with humidity at 15 ± 3 percent. Core temperature rose by 1.2°C, from roughly 37°C to 38.2°C in the athletes and 37.2°C to 38.4°C in the non-athletes. The dose, in other words, was set by the cabin.
A larger 2018 study in Heart Vessels (Kunutsor et al., PMID 29971466) took 102 experienced sauna users with a mean age of 51.9 years through a 30-minute session at a mean of 73°C and measured blood markers before, immediately after, and 30 minutes later. NT-proBNP rose from a median of 46.0 ng/L to 50.5 ng/L immediately after, a median change of 12 percent. The authors were explicit that mechanisms are not established and that long-term interventional studies are still needed.
Neither study was designed to answer a question about winter, and neither should be read as one. What they support is narrower: if your cabin reaches its normal operating temperature, the session you get in January is the session you get in July.
