The Harvia story

Harvia Sauna Heaters: Made in Finland Since 1950

Tapani Harvia built his first wood-burning sauna heater in 1950, in a workshop on the ground floor of his own house in Finland. They were made for his own family and for friends. The first heaters built for sale followed in the mid-1950s, and by the end of the 1960s the workshop was producing around a thousand a year.

In the early 1970s the company moved to Muurame in Central Finland and built a proper factory. It's still there. Harvia is now listed on Nasdaq Helsinki, employs more than 700 people and turned over 198.9 million euros in 2025, and the reason that matters to you is narrow: a manufacturer that size still makes elements and thermostats for heaters it sold ten years ago. In year six, the part exists.

Seventy-five years on, the engineering priorities haven't really changed: put as much stone as possible in contact with the elements, build the casing from steel that survives decades of thermal cycling, and keep the controls simple enough that a bather can work them in the dark.

The Complete Harvia Sauna Heater Lineup: Electric, Combi and Wood

Harvia splits into four families. Which one you need is decided almost entirely by room size, where the heater can physically sit, and whether you want electric or fire.

Wall-mounted electric

Bolt it to the wall and the floor stays yours. That's the whole argument for this family, and that's why it covers the smallest rooms we sell, from 1.9kW up to 8kW. KIP45, KIP60 and KIP80 in steel or black, The Wall as SW60, SW80, SWS60 and SWS80, Spirit SP60E to SP90E, and the Vega Compact 1900 and 3500. The KIP B models carry their own timer and thermostat. No second box to buy, no cable to run into a hot room.

Pillar and basket electric

A vertical column of stone with the elements running through it. That's what lets you choose your steam at the ladle: water on the side comes back soft, water on top comes back sharp. Cilindro PC60 through PC110E runs 6 to 10.5kW. Club K10G, K12.5G and K15G is a floor-standing basket that goes to 14.8kW for bigger rooms.

Premium electric and combi

One room, two climates. Virta Combi adds a water reservoir, so the same unit runs as a dry Finnish sauna or as a humid steam room, set from the controller rather than by moving furniture. Virta HL60E to HL110E covers the standard range, Combi runs HL80SA to HL110SA, and Virta Pro reaches 16 and 20kW for commercial rooms.

Wood-burning stoves

No circuit, no controller, no power bill. If the sauna's going somewhere the electrician can't easily reach, this is the answer, and for a lot of people the fire is the point rather than a compromise. Legend 150 to 300, Pro 20 to 36, Linear 16 to 22, the compact M3, the Cilindro 16 and 20, the WP500, and the 40kW Harvia 50 for a bathhouse. Every one of them needs a chimney and a floor plate. Budget for both.

Measure the room in feet, multiply length by width by height, then find your volume below. We do this on the phone all day, so if the number lands awkwardly between two rows, call and we'll settle it. Every figure here is Harvia's published range for that output. If your room falls between two rows, size up rather than down, and add roughly 3.9 cubic feet of load for every square foot of glass or uninsulated stone before you compare.

Measure length times width times height. Bench height does not change the calculation, but ceiling height does.

Ranges overlap because build quality changes the answer. An insulated room with a solid wooden door sits at the bottom of its band; the same room with a full glass front sits at the top. Uninsulated log walls need the volume multiplied by 1.5 before you look at this table at all.

Harvia Controls and Stones: What Else You Need to Buy

A heater on its own won't run a sauna. Depending on the model you may need a control unit, and you will always need stones. Neither is included, and both are worth deciding on before you order rather than after.

Do you need a control unit?

On KIP, the B models carry their controls on board and the W models do not. On Cilindro it runs the other way: a plain PC60, PC80 or PC90 has controls built in, while the E models need a separate unit. Club G, Spirit and every Virta take a controller as standard. Harvia's current control lines are Xenio and Fenix, and the controller is what gives you remote or app starting, so it isn't purely a cost to avoid. If you want the room hot when you get home, you want the controller.

How many stones, and which ones

Stone quantity is set by the heater, not by the room. A wall-mounted KIP takes on the order of 40 lbs, a Virta around 110 lbs, and a Cilindro pillar up to 200 lbs. Harvia specifies split-face stones between 5 and 10 cm and is explicit that the wrong stones will void the heater warranty, so this isn't a place to improvise with landscaping rock. Stack them loosely rather than packing them tight, because the air has to move through the column.

Stones are a consumable. They crack and crumble with heat cycling, and Harvia asks that you restack them at least once a year and replace them when they start breaking down. Most people replace every one to two years at three or four sessions a week. Note that sauna stones are excluded from the warranty entirely.

What Sets Harvia Apart From Other Sauna Heater Brands

Three decisions you can see in the hardware rather than in the brochure. Each one changes something you'll notice from the bench.

Stone mass in direct contact

Plenty of heaters hold their stones in a tray above the elements, where the rock is warmed by air rather than by contact. Harvia builds the other way, getting as much stone as possible touching the elements directly. The Cilindro column and the Club basket both do this. More stone in contact means the heat comes off the rock rather than off glowing metal. That's what people mean when they say the steam feels softer. You feel it as warmth on the skin instead of a sting.

Built-in controls where it makes sense

The KIP B models and the Cilindro B models put the timer and thermostat on the heater itself. That is one less wall unit to buy, one less cable to run inside a hot room, and one less thing to fail. The E models take a separate controller when you want app control or a remote start.

One family, every room size

The range runs from a 1.9kW plug-in unit for a converted closet to a 40kW commercial wood stove, all from one manufacturer with one parts supply. We have watched other brands orphan a heater four years in. In year six, with Harvia, the part still exists.

What Sauna Research Suggests About Regular Heat Exposure

Traditional Finnish sauna bathing raises core body temperature and heart rate in a way researchers often compare to moderate physical activity. Long-running observational work from Finland, where sauna use is close to universal, has reported associations between frequent sauna bathing and cardiovascular measures, though observational studies cannot establish cause.

Users commonly report better sleep, easier muscle recovery after training, and a period of calm afterwards. These are consistent and widely described, but they are subjective reports rather than clinical outcomes, and individual responses vary.

The distinction that matters when choosing a heater is between radiant warmth and stone-driven heat. An infrared cabin warms the body directly with panels and runs cool enough to sit in comfortably at around 120 to 150 degrees Fahrenheit. A traditional Finnish room heats the air and the stone mass to 160 to 190 degrees Fahrenheit, and the water you throw on the stones, which Finns call loyly, produces a humidity burst that briefly makes it feel far hotter still. They're different experiences, and people who want one usually don't want the other.

Stone mass is what separates heaters within the traditional category. A unit holding 200 lbs of rock stores far more energy than one holding 40, which means it recovers faster after water is thrown, holds temperature more evenly through a long session, and produces the softer steam most bathers are actually after. It's also why a bigger stone capacity usually matters more than a bigger kilowatt number once the room is correctly sized.

What is not in question is the mechanism a traditional heater provides: stone mass holding heat, water on the stones raising humidity in a burst, and a room that stays hot enough for the body to respond to it. That is what the heater output rating is actually for.

Before You Order a Harvia Heater: What to Know

Nine things worth settling before you order. None of them is difficult. They're all a lot easier to sort out now than on the day the crate arrives and the circuit is not in.

Measure the room in cubic feet

Length times width times height. Every Harvia heater is rated for a volume range, and picking by room footprint alone is the most common sizing mistake.

Count the glass

Glass and uninsulated stone hold no heat. Harvia adds roughly 1.2 cubic meters of load per square meter of glass, near 3.9 cubic feet per square foot. A large glass door can move you up a size.

Stones are separate

Every electric heater needs stones and none include them. Depending on the model that is 100 to 200 lbs of split-face stone, ordered by the box.

Check whether you need a controller

The B models have controls built in. The E, W and G models need a separate Harvia control unit, which is an extra purchase and an extra wall position to plan.

Book the electrician early

Every 240V heater is hardwired, and the larger ones need two circuits. Get the circuit sized before the heater arrives rather than after.

Wood stoves need a chimney

A wood-burning stove needs a flue, a floor plate and clearance to combustibles. Budget for the chimney kit at the same time as the stove.

Check your ceiling height

Most Harvia heaters need a minimum room height around 75 to 78 inches, and the bench-to-ceiling gap matters as much as the floor area. Rooms taller than about eight feet waste heat above head level.

Leave the safety clearances

Every heater has published minimum distances to side walls, benches and the ceiling. They are model-specific and they are not suggestions. Harvia sells a guard rail for most models and we recommend one wherever a bather could stumble into the heater. Some jurisdictions require one, so check with your inspector.

Know your voltage and phase

Most homes are 240V single phase. Commercial buildings are often 208V three phase, and the same heater performs differently on each. Check the panel before you choose, not after.

Harvia for Commercial Rooms and Multi-Unit Orders

A good part of the Harvia range is built for duty cycles a home sauna never sees. Club runs to 14.8kW, Virta Pro to 20kW, and the Harvia 50 wood stove to 40kW for a bathhouse. Commercial rooms are also where 208V three-phase power shows up, and the same heater performs differently on three-phase than on a domestic 240V single-phase supply, so the specification needs doing properly rather than by model name.

Two things change commercially. Harvia's warranty drops on commercial duty: electric heaters stay at two years but their heating elements fall to six months, and wood-burning stoves fall to six months outright. And the mechanical code asks more of a commercial room than a domestic one, including a timer with the control positioned outside the sauna and a ventilation opening at the door.

Water on the Stones: What a Harvia Room Actually Feels Like

It's a Tuesday in February and the room has been on for forty minutes. The stone column at the corner has stopped ticking and settled into a steady output you can feel on your shins from the bench. You climb up to the top bench where the air is a good fifteen degrees hotter, and sit.

The ladle holds about a cup. Poured slowly onto the top of the stones it comes back at you within a second or two, a wave across the shoulders sharp enough to make you drop your chin. Thrown against the side of the column instead it arrives softer and slower and fills the room rather than hitting you.

Fifteen minutes later you step outside into the cold air and the contrast is the entire point of the exercise. That contrast is what the stone mass buys you.

Choosing the Right Harvia Sauna Heater

Four questions, in the order that actually settles it. Most of the calls we take are decided by the first one.

Start with the room volume, not the price

Work out length times width times height in feet, add for any glass or uninsulated stone, then find the heater whose published range covers that number. An undersized heater never really gets the room hot. It just runs, constantly, trying. An oversized one cycles off before the stones are fully charged, which leaves you with a hot room and disappointing steam.

Decide whether you want controls on the heater or on the wall

Built-in controls are simpler, cheaper and fine for most home saunas. A separate controller is worth it if you want to start the room from your phone on the drive home, or if the heater sits somewhere awkward to reach. That choice narrows the list faster than almost anything else.

Check the stone capacity before you finalize it

Two heaters at the same output can hold very different amounts of rock. More stone gives softer steam, better recovery between ladles and a more even room, and it is the single spec most buyers overlook. It also affects the running cost, because a well-charged stone mass holds heat while the elements cycle off. Factor the stones into the budget as well, since none of the electric heaters include them and a large pillar heater can need five boxes.

Then choose electric or wood

Electric's the default for indoor rooms and anywhere a circuit already exists. Wood makes sense outdoors, off-grid, or when the fire is part of what you want from the experience. Wood needs a chimney, a floor plate and somewhere to keep dry logs, so it's a bigger build, not just a different heater.

Who makes Harvia and how long have they been building sauna heaters?

What is the difference between Harvia's B models and E models?

The separate controller is what gives you remote or app-based starting, so it is not purely a cost you want to avoid.

How long should a sauna session be, and how often?

Most bathers run 10 to 20 minutes at a time, often in two or three rounds with a cool-down between them. Finnish practice tends toward several sessions a week rather than one long one. Start shorter than you think and build up, drink water before and after, and leave the room whenever you have had enough rather than working to a target.

Do Harvia heaters need a GFCI breaker, and is a dedicated circuit required?

It depends on where the sauna sits and which code edition your jurisdiction has adopted, and outdoor installations are treated differently from indoor ones. That's a question for your electrician and your inspector. For what it's worth, Harvia states in its own manuals that the heater should not be connected through a GFI, because nuisance tripping causes wear on internal components, so the two can conflict and your inspector decides. Every 240V heater is hardwired and the larger models require two circuits.

What warranty comes with a Harvia heater?

Harvia's current terms give family use two years, and three years on an electric heater if you register it on Harvia's site within thirty days of purchase. Commercial cover is where it changes: electric heaters stay at two years but heating elements drop to six months, and wood-burning stoves fall to six months. Sauna stones are not warranted at all, and using stones Harvia has not approved can void cover on the heater itself. Warranty also requires proof of installation by a qualified electrician.

How do Harvia heaters ship, and what do I need ready before delivery?

Most electric heaters ship by parcel carrier and arrive without an appointment. Larger units and wood-burning stoves move by LTL freight, which needs someone present to receive and inspect. Before delivery, have the circuit installed and inspected, the room finished, and your stones on hand, since no electric heater ships with stones included.
